SAP Treasury in Public Cloud: What Can You Actually Do Today?

For many experienced SAP Treasury users, there is still a perception that serious treasury functionality requires SAP S/4HANA Private Cloud or an on-premise system.

That picture is changing.

SAP S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition now provides a substantial treasury footprint covering cash and liquidity management, financial transactions, FX risk, debt and investments, payments and bank connectivity.

So what can a corporate treasury function actually run in SAP Public Cloud?

Cash and Liquidity Management

Cash Management provides the foundation.

Public Edition supports cash positions, bank and house bank information, bank account master data and cash forecasting capabilities. This gives Treasury visibility over current and expected liquidity and provides the cash layer into which other SAP processes can integrate.

For organisations moving to a cloud-first architecture, this means core cash visibility no longer needs to sit outside the S/4HANA Public Cloud environment.

Treasury and Risk Management

Public Cloud also includes significant Treasury and Risk Management (TRM) functionality.

SAP positions the solution around financial risk management and debt and investment management. Treasury can manage financial transactions including foreign exchange, borrowing and investment activities, with the resulting cash flows integrated into Cash and Liquidity Management.

The solution also supports FX exposure management and hedge management, including hedge accounting scenarios for net open exposures and balance-sheet FX risk.

This is important because it allows Treasury to connect financial risk management with the underlying cash forecast rather than operating TRM as an isolated application.

Advanced Payment Management

One of the more significant developments is the availability of SAP Advanced Payment Management (APM) in Public Edition.

APM provides a central payment processing capability for payments originating from SAP and non-SAP systems. Payments can be validated, transformed, monitored and processed through a central payment architecture.

It also includes in-house banking capability, allowing a corporate group to centralise payment activity and potentially reduce the number of external bank accounts maintained by subsidiaries.

This opens the door to a much broader Public Cloud treasury architecture:

Cash Management → TRM → APM → Bank Connectivity

rather than treating payments, treasury transactions and liquidity as separate processes.

Connecting Treasury to Banks and Markets

The Public Cloud treasury architecture can also integrate with surrounding SAP services.

SAP documents integration with SAP Multi-Bank Connectivity, SAP Market Rates Management and SAP Trading Platform Integration, as well as external trading platforms and SWIFT-based treasury correspondence scenarios.

This means the architecture can extend beyond internal transaction processing into bank communication, market data and external trading.

Public Cloud Is Becoming a Serious Treasury Platform

SAP Public Cloud Treasury should no longer be viewed simply as basic cash management attached to an ERP system.

The combination of Cash and Liquidity Management, TRM, APM, in-house banking and external connectivity means that a significant corporate treasury architecture can now be designed around S/4HANA Cloud Public Edition.

However, Public and Private Cloud are not identical.

Public Edition is deliberately more standardised. Available product types, configuration options, integrations and extensibility need to be assessed against the organisation's actual treasury requirements rather than assuming that an existing ECC or S/4HANA Private Cloud design can simply be reproduced.

That makes the architecture and fit-gap assessment particularly important.

The question for Treasury is therefore changing from:

“Can SAP Public Cloud support Treasury?”

to:

“How much of our target Treasury architecture can now be delivered in Public Cloud — and where do we genuinely still need something else?”

For many organisations, the answer may now be considerably more than they expect.
