Cash visibility
Real-Time Treasury: Integrating Cash Management, Payments and TRM in SAP
Real-time treasury is not a dashboard. It is an architecture.
For many organisations, improving cash visibility starts with implementing SAP Cash Management. But visibility alone does not create real-time treasury.
The greater value comes from integrating Cash Management, Treasury and Risk Management (TRM), payment processing and bank connectivity so that Treasury has a continuously evolving view of liquidity — from forecast cash flows through payment execution to actual bank activity.
Cash Management as the Liquidity Layer
SAP Cash Management can provide Treasury with a consolidated view of current and future liquidity across bank accounts, entities and currencies.
Through One Exposure from Operations, cash-relevant information from different SAP applications can be brought together into a common liquidity structure. This allows Treasury to analyse operational cash flows alongside treasury transactions, payments and bank balances rather than maintaining separate forecasts and spreadsheets.
The objective should be more than producing a better cash report. Cash Management should become the central liquidity layer connecting the wider treasury architecture.
Integrating TRM into the Cash Forecast
Treasury transactions can represent some of the largest cash movements within an organisation.
FX settlements, debt repayments, interest payments, investments, derivatives and other transactions managed through SAP TRM can generate significant future liquidity requirements.
Integrating these flows into Cash Management allows expected treasury settlements to appear automatically within the liquidity forecast.
Treasury can therefore see not only today's cash position, but also the impact of upcoming funding, investment and risk-management activities.
Connecting Payments with APM
SAP Advanced Payment Management (APM) extends this architecture into payment processing.
As payments move from initiation through validation, routing and execution, Treasury gains greater visibility over outgoing liquidity before the transactions ultimately appear on the bank statement.
Combined with SAP Cash Management, this creates a much stronger connection between what Treasury expects to happen and what is actually being executed.
Rather than waiting for end-of-day statements, Treasury can increasingly understand its liquidity position throughout the day.
Intraday Bank Reporting Closes the Loop
Bank connectivity completes the architecture.
Intraday reporting such as camt.052 can provide updated information on bank balances and transactions during the day, while end-of-day statements such as camt.053 provide the final bank position.
Expected cash flows can progressively be reconciled against actual bank activity.
The result is a continuous process:
Forecast → Treasury Transaction → Payment → Bank → Actual Cash Position
This significantly reduces the reliance on manually maintained memo records, spreadsheets and other offline processes traditionally used to understand intraday liquidity.
From Cash Reporting to Real-Time Treasury
The real opportunity is therefore not simply implementing another SAP application.
It is designing an integrated treasury architecture in which Cash Management, TRM, APM, bank connectivity and operational cash flows work together.
When designed correctly, Treasury moves beyond asking:
“What is our cash position?”
Instead, it can answer:
“What is our position now, what is expected to happen next, what has changed — and what action do we need to take?”
That is the foundation of real-time treasury.
